Work History: Kiran is a trained brewer and worked at Carlton and United Beverages (Australia) in 1974. Four years later, she joined Biocon Biochemicals (Ireland). Kiran acted as the Trainee Manager in Biocon before moving back to India. She is currently the Chairperson of Biocon India and is touted as one of the wealthiest women in the country.
Education: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw graduated in Zoology from Bangalore University in 1973. By 1974, she joined University of Ballarat to pursue a career as a brewer. She's always had a keen interest in Biomedical Engineering.
Bio: Despite specializing in Zoology, Kiran continued to concentrate on an entirely different paradigm - this is reflected in her certification as a qualified brewer. After working with Carlton and United Beverages for some years, she decided to make a career switch once again. This time, she was interested on biotechnology.
With this intention, she joined Biocon Ireland. A few years later, she put forward the idea of starting a subsidiary of Biocon in India. Although the management welcomed the decision with skepticism, Kiran surged ahead with her plans. Limited funding for her company was one of the major roadblocks. Kiran started operations in India with just $220.
In spite of these shortcomings, Kiran could steer the operations in an effective manner. News started to spread in the country and soon there were takers for the products released by Biocon India. High-level company executives started to monitor the situation with interest. More funds were allocated to Biocon India. Ultimately, the company began prospering under the fine leadership of Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.
Ms Shaw is highly regarded in the country. She was conveyed countless awards including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. She was also contemplated as the Business Woman of the Year by several leading national and international dailies. Even on the unlikeliest of the situations, Ms Kiran maintained her temperament. She is respected by her peers and is often acknowledged as a mild natured person. She has also contributed a lot to the uplift of her country, especially her native city Bangalore. Ms Shaw is also renowned for her art collection and cross-country adventure trips.
