Nationality: Indian
Year of Birth: 1946
Work History: NR Narayana Murthy had served initially as the chief systems' programmer at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He was an avid programmer and often spent his free time developing programs for the Electronics Corporation of India. After a brief period at Patni Computer Systems, he concentrated on establishing a software company for himself. By 1981, that distant dream became a reality in the form of Infosys - one of India's largest software exporters. He had functioned as the President of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Services Companies) from 1992 to 1994. Presently, he is serving as the chief non-executive chairperson and the Chief Mentor of Infosys.
Education: NR Narayana Murthy obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Institute of Engineering Mysore in 1967. By 1969, he received his Masters on the same subject from the Indian Institute of Technology.
Bio: Narayana Murthy established Infosys with the prime intention of serving the western community along with providing an economic uplift to Indian economy. His company still recruits Indian graduates every quarterly and is one of the fastest growing software exporters of this century! However, Mr. Murthy had to toil hard to scale such heights.
With ample support from his spouse Sudha Murthy, Mr. Murthy began his stride into the murky waters that was dominated by the Westerners. He also sought help from six other software engineers of his time to establish Infosys. During the earlier years, it was primarily a collective effort. Mr. Murthy would allocate work to everyone (which ironically included his wife too). He had to struggle to maintain the deadlines. Once profits began to surge, he started to recruit enthusiastic candidates. Rigorous interviews were held across India to find potential candidates. Mr. Murthy was very particular about his "assets" - by which he meant his employees.
Within a few years, Mr. Murthy could enhance the outlook of Infosys. As the Western countries realized the potentials of outsourcing software projects, the profits began to exceed back home. He was granted various awards in India such as the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in recognition of his meritorious works.
