Bio: After the death of his father, Azim Premji had a long and daunting journey ahead. Although the concern (then known as Western India Vegetable Product Company) was making rapid progress in the economic sector, Premji had visionary insights in store. Under the fine leadership of Premji, the company began to focus on electronics. He pulled the right set of strings and Wipro started manufacturing electrical bulbs in close association with GE.
The company also initiated the production of consumer goods like soaps and baby care products. The future of the corporation seemed bleak - various other giants such as the Hindustan Lever began churning out superior products. By 1980, Premji began to realize the vast potentialities of the software industry. Within months, vegetable oil factories were converted to plush IT offices. The company roped in aspiring graduates, who had an inclination for developing software. Wipro Technologies also started manufacturing computer systems and other kinds of accessories.
The annual profits began to surge higher. Unlike some of the other software companies based on India, Premji realized the vantages of keeping the employees happier by increasing their wages and reducing workloads. Very often, he has emphasized on recruiting the cream of the society. One of the best aspects associated with Azim Premji is the humbleness. He does not command a luxurious lifestyle and still leads a nominal life taking care of Wipro Technologies.
Under the leadership of Premji, Wipro became one of the top 100 technology companies. He is the fifth richest Indian and currently takes time to concentrate on the Azim Premji Foundation - an institution that stresses on imparting good education to the less unfortunate.
