In the company, he was offered innumerable positions before being offered the post of the chief executive officer in 1996.
Education: Ray holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, which he had secured from the American University of Beirut in 1953. He obtained a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1957. Ironically, he worked and learned in these colleges, before joining corporations that thrived on oil business.
Bio: Ever since his school days, Ray R Irani displayed that he possessed a quick and calculating mind that helped to earn his PhD at the age of 22. It is of no wonder that Occidental Petroleum Corporation is scaling even greater heights under the leadership of this eminent personality.
Ray R Irani was a renowned developer and used to spend hours playing with various chemicals. He had applied for patents to 150 ingeniously developed chemical products. Ray had spent his days in Occidental Petroleum, researching on newer strategies to keep the business afloat. According to industry experts, Armand Hammer (who was the then chief executive officer of Occidental Petroleum Company) did not care about the future prospects of the company. He faced the strenuous situations after the premature death of Hammer; this was when the responsibilities were handled to Ray.
Ray had to face stiff competition from fellow workers who were eyeing on power and wealth - this included Hammer himself during the initial days. Ironically, within months, the company started to surge ahead. He created headlines by selling a major chunk of the company stocks, with the prime intention of consolidating the rest of the business operations. Under his guidance, Occidental Petroleum started acquiring exclusive rights in the domestic and international oil sales pitch by 2003.
